Firestorm just opened on Saturday May 24th in downtown Asheville. It’s shaping up to be faery central.

Firestorm is a cool coffee house with the usual choice of baked goods, salads and wraps for food. It’s right on the corner of Coxe and Commerce, at 48 Commerce Street, where the ill fated Edie’s Cereal Bar used to be.

There’s a nice collection of radical books, some great company, and wireless internet to keep it all interesting. The full stage can also be reserved as a meeting room, “The Secret Room.” Prepare for artistic performances and informational seminars. The Local Exchange Trading System, a barter group that uses alternative currency online to purchase goods or services, is meeting at Firestorm Café on a regular basis.

Some radical faeries are involved with the worker owned establishment: Catfish and Vermin.

Vermin, aspires to be a worker owner. He is an intern. Interns are on a one month period of working only for tips. Then he will be working for minimum wage plus tips. After the 3rd month is complete workers can apply to become worker owners, where wage will be dependent upon net income. “The aim is to pay ourselves minimum wage at first and a living wage in the future,” said Vermin. “After that we’ll reinvest the proceeds back into the community.”
